MBU PC is the revival of Marble Blast Ultra, a puzzle‑platformer originally developed by GarageGames and released on January 25, 2006 for the Xbox 360 through Xbox Live Arcade.
Marble Blast Ultra quickly became one of XBLA's standout titles, selling over 24,000 copies in its first few days and climbing into the Top Played Xbox Live Games list next to Halo 2, Call of Duty 2, and Dead or Alive 4, games that defined an era. It became one of those easy, everyday 2000s games people kept running while they hung out or talked on Xbox Live, a comfortable break between long sessions of Halo or Gears of War.
The game even appeared in an Xbox "Game With Fame" event in 2006, where an 18‑year‑old Rihanna played Marble Blast Ultra with fans. Moments like that helped cement it as part of early Xbox 360 culture, tied to the Y2K era, its bright candy‑colored designs, and the Frutiger Aero aesthetic that defined so many mid‑2000s games.
In the years that followed, the game stayed popular throughout the Xbox 360's lifespan, selling well over 756,000 copies. From 2006 to 2010 it regularly showed up in the Top 10 and Top 20 most played XBLA titles before it was removed from the Xbox Live Marketplace in February 2011. Many players assumed it had simply faded away, but the real story was more complicated.
In 2009, GarageGames rebranded as Instant Action and launched InstantAction.com, aiming to bring higher quality games to web browsers. Marble Blast Ultra was one of the titles planned for the platform under the name Marble Blast Online. Instant Action saw some success, but by the end of 2010 the company shut down. During the transition between GarageGames and Instant Action, much of the company's IP was sold off. The rights to Marble Blast were lost in the process, which led to the game's removal from the Xbox Live Marketplace in 2011.
Its disappearance created a long‑lasting sense of nostalgia among fans. Over time, Marble Blast Ultra became one of those lost‑era games people wished they could play again, tied to memories of early Xbox 360 culture, the Y2K era, mid‑2000s multiplayer nights, and the bright, colorful look of games from that time.
In 2021, that nostalgia turned into action. A group of dedicated fans began working to faithfully recreate the original game for PC, preserving everything people loved about it while bringing it into the modern era. That effort eventually became MBU PC.
